The story of Christmas - from the Annunciation (25th March) to Candlemas (2nd February). Candlemas is the 40th and last day of the Great Festival of Christmas.
Solos, duets and choir songs in a variety of styles - like a musical Advent Calendar, there are little jewels behind every window.
The centrepiece of the concert was a performance of the Requiem in D minor by Fauré. The organist for this concert is Benedict Todd from All Saints Stamford, and the choir was conducted by Fergus Black.
The music is all written by women, and comes from the past thousand years. The earliest is a motet by Hildegard of Bingen written in the twelfth century and the latest is the Trisagion by the Ukranian composer Iryna Aleksiychuk, written in 2022. The concert also spans the globe with music from Finland, New Zealand, Italy, France, the USA, as well as the UK.
A return visit to Uffington, and a large congregation enjoyed an Evensong in the Easter Season. It was a pleasure to work again with organist, Stephen Barber.
You may think it a little odd to be doing a Christmas concert in February. But there are good reasons:
Vivaldi's famous Gloria - and a more unusual Kyrie, formed the second part of this Italian-themed programme
A varied selection of music to celebrate Spring, Easter, Shakespeare and St George. The choir was joined by pianist Kate Bidwell and conducted by Fergus Black.
A choir of women’s voices gives a concert of evocative Christmas music, from Gregorian Chant to John Tavener's The Lamb, including In nativitatem Domini canticum by Charpentier and a selection of Christmas melodies with flute descants.
Evensong of Easter music, preceded by a short recital of Easter Organ Music, given by Stephen Barber.
A concert of evocative Christmas music, from Gregorian Chant to John Tavener, including Michel Corrette’s Messe Pour Le Temps De Noël (1788), and a selection of traditional Christmas melodies.
